Sensory Room Appeal: Can you help Bring Light to the Beacon?

The Adult Mental Health Inpatient Occupational Therapy Service covers a multitude of wards (Acute, Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, Forensic & Rehabilitation) at sites across Leicester & Leicestershire. We believe that regardless of where a patient is on their journey of their health recovery, they receive the same excellent level of care  that is individual and tailored to their needs.

Sensory preferences help recovery

Helping patients to identify their sensory preferences can help them self-regulate, reduce challenging behaviours they may exhibit, as well as support them to be alert enough to engage in everyday occupations.

Whilst our dream would be to be able to provide every ward with a multifunctional sensory room, this would require a significant financial investment. Instead we aim to start small, building up our resources to enable us to have a selection of portable, multi sensory items that OT staff can utilise on the wards to create ‘pop up’ sensory sessions for patients - whether that is on a one-to-one basis or a group-based session.

Our wishlist

We are based across three sites. We are aiming to buy three of each item on our wishlist. This  will increase the opportunity for patients to use the sensory items and reduce travelling time to transfer items across sites.

Key things on our wish list are:

SenSit Chair and footstool 3 x £2,000
Sensory items to cover all sensory modalities 3 x £500
Weighted blanket 3 x £150
Miscellaneous (storage, cleaning, spares) 3 x £150
