Can you help us to install sensory spaces for our patients to use?

We are seeking to install sensory spaces across a number of our sites to support the treatment, care and experience for our patients.

Sensory rooms and equipment play an important role in helping patients recover from mental health illnesses and engage in therapies for those with developmental difficulties, disabilities and sensory impairments.

All of our sensory spaces require wall and floor padding so they can be used safely by our patients but also require equipment, both built-in and removable allowing flexible use for staff.

What are the benefits of sensory rooms and equipment?

·      Improves fine and gross motor skills allowing for a more independent lifestyle

·      Improves cognition, communication and physical ability

·      Encourages learning and relaxation

·      Helps families to support patients at home using learned sensory therapies

·      Helps de-escalate, provide calm, reassurance for those with complex mental health needs

Research demonstrates the positive impact of sensory rooms within mental health and learning disability settings. Angela Seckman et al found that the use of a sensory room intervention substantially decreased patients’ distress and reduced restraint, seclusion use and aggressive behaviours.  Nastaran Doroud et al 2024 also found that not only do sensory rooms act as a safe space that encourages recovery, self-management, and sense of control but also help patients escape from clinical environments to unwind.  A report by the charity New Life also states that 87% of

families report that specialist toys improved relationships and 82% of parents had a better understanding of their child’s needs as a result of sensory toys.

“By using installing a sensory room for children’s therapy sessions, it will enhance the delivery of our services and help us have a truly profound impact on the young patients we look after”
